 CHAPTER VI.

THE DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM I’ANSON AND 

MARGARET DENT.

The earliest I’Anson entry in the registers of the parish of Wensley records the marriage of William I’Anson with margaret Dent on 6th May, 1634. On the death of his father, James I’Anson, in 1625, Leonard I’Anson, the older brother, apparently took over the farm at Hauxwell, and William moved to Leyburn, in the parish of Wensley. His wife, Margaret, was daughter of Owen Dent, of Leyburn, who died in 1639. An extract of his Will, in which the said Margaret is mentioned, appears in a later chapter.

WILLIAM I’ANSON died at the age of 55, and was buried at Wensley on 30th June, 1659. His widow, Margaret, survived him thirty years, and died earlly in the year 1689, an inventory ofher goods being made by her son Henry on 7th February, 1689, in which she is described as "Margaret Janson, widow, late of Layborne, in the parish of Wensley."

There were four children of the marriage, three sons and one daughter.

  1. James, baptised at Wensley 27th September, 1638. Of whom presently.
  2. Christopher, baptised at Wensley 10th January, 1642, and buried there 10th October, 1644.
  3. Henry, baptised at Wensley, 25th March, 1645, and living in 1689.
Daughter – Margaret, baptised at Wensley, 25th September, 1636, and buried there 8th May, 1651 JAMES I’ANSON, eldest son of William, by Margaret, his wife, baptised at Wensley 27th September, 1638, joined the Society of Friends, previous to his marriage with Jane, daughter of William Horner, of Wood Hall, Coverdale, on 19th December, 1664. His wife, Jane died on 6th February, 1700. There were five children of the marriage, three sons and two daughters.

JOHN I’ANSON, of Leyburn, Linen Weaver (eldest son of James I’Anson and Jane Horner), born 30th January, 1666. Married Anne, eldest daughter of Arthur Hudson, of Helme-in-Kildwicke, on 23rd February, 1698, and had issue six sons.

  1. William, died in infancy, 7th March, 1700.
  2. Joshua, born 9th May, 1700. Of whom presently.
  3. James, born 1st September, 1701. Maried, on 6th February, 1723, Deborah Harker, of Bishopdale, and by her had three children, two sons and on daughter.

  2. Joseph, born 18th December, 1704; the founder of the branch of the HALSEY JANSONS, of whom presently.
  3. Isaac, born 4th August, 1710. Married, on 8th February, 1733, rebecca Barker, of Chantry, by whom he had four children, one son and three daughters.

JOSHUA I’ANSON (eldest surviving son of John I’Anson, of Leyburn, Linen Weaver) was born 9th May, 1700. Married, at Masham, on 22nd February, 1730, Beatrice, daughter of Thomas Hedley, of High Moss, Co. York. Settled later in Darlington, where his wife, Beatrice, died and was buried on 31st December, 1770, aged 61. Joshua died and was buried at Darlington 28th March, 1786. He had six sons and four daughters.

  3. JOSHUA, born in 1740, Married Hannah, daughter of Thomas Moses, of Raby, Co. Durham. Of whom presently.
  4. JAMES, born in 1744, and married three times: (1) Judith Wade, (2) Miriam Umfreville, (3) Jane brockill. Of whom presently.
  5. JOHN, born 17th May, 1748. Married Elizabeth Umfreville. Of whom presently.
  6. WILLIAM, born 16th October, 1751. Married Mary Kitching, of Darlington. Of whom presently.
Daughters-
  1. Ann, born in 1735. Married, in 1770, William Kitching, Ironfounder, of Darlington. She died in 1791.
  2. Haanah, born in 1737. Married ----- Empson.
  3. Jane, married to William Waddington.
  4. Mary, married to W. Cudworth.
JOSHUA I’ANSON (third son of Joshua I’Anson by Beatrice Hedley, his wife), born in 1740. Married Hannah, daughter of Thomas Moses, of raby, Co. Durham, by whom he had three sons and on daughter.

Daughter- Jane. WILLIAM I’ANSON, of Darlington, and later of Lloyd’s (third son of Joshua I’Anson and Hannah Moses), changed the spelling of his name from I’Anson to Janson on going to London. He married Mary, daughter of Andrew Hill, of London, by whom he had nine children, six sons and three daughters.

  4. FREDERIC, born 1st August, 1803. Married sarah Tindall. Of whom presently.
  5. John, born 3rd April, 1807; died 16th September, 1833, s.p.
  6. WILLIAM, born 6th June, 1805. Married Eliza Jane Dearman. Of whom presently.

  1. Mary, born 6th June, 1805; died 9th March, 1888. Married Henry Andrews, 2nd July, 1829.
  2. Eliza, born 17th June, 1810; died 1st June, 1896.
  3. Caroline, born 11th February, 1813; died 24th March, 1903.
EDMUND JANSON, of London (eldest son of William Janson of Lloyd’s, by his wife, Mary Hill of London), was born on 24th October, 1797, and married, on 24th August, 1820, Elizabeth, daughter of Richard Lowe, of Worcester. He died on 2nd September, 1826, in the 29th year of his age. He had issue one son and one daughter.

Son-

William Edmund Janson, born 20th October, 1823; died, unmarried, on 1st October, 1840. Daughter- Elizabeth, born 9th September, 1826; died 22nd January, 1869. She married, on 3rd August, 1848, James Hack Tuke, of Hitchin, Co. Herts. RICHARD JANSON, of London (second son of William Janson, of lloyd’s, by his wife, Mary Hill, of London), was born on 18th April, 1799, and died 18th July, 1830. He married, on 20th November, 1822, firstly, Mary, daughter of James Backhoues, of Darlington, by whom he had one child.

Daughter-

Mary Jane, born 9th March, 1824; died August, 1838. His first wife having died on 18th December, 1824, he married, secondly, on 1st january, 1828, Anne, daughter of Joseph Foster, of Bromley, by whom he had one son.

Son-

Richard Janson, born 3rd March, 1829; died on 11th March, 1890. Married on 7th May, 1863, Mary Clarke, by whom he had one daughter.

Daughter – 

Gertrude Mary, born 13th June, 1868, married Rev. E. Marsh Edwards.
 
 

ALFRED JANSON (third son of William Janson of Lloyd’s, and Mary Hill) was born 6th December, 1800, and died on 4th December 1876. He married twice, (1) on 7th september, 1825, Sarah Musgrave Dillwyn, and (2) Eliza, daughter of John Masterman, M.P. for London. He had three children, one son and two daughters.

Son-

  1. William Dillwyn Janson, born 14th February, 1828; died 13th June, 1876. Married Ada, daughter of Captain Thornhill, by whom he had one child.
Daughters-
  1. Mary Anne, born 15th July, 1826. Married, 10th December, 1852, Rev. T. V. French, Bishop of Lahore.
  2. Ellen, born 13th February, 1831. Married, 20th April, 1854, to Rev. S. M. Barkworth.
FREDERICK JANSON, of Stoke Newington (fourth son of William Janson, of Lloyd’s, and Mary Hill), was born on 1st August, 1803; he died on 23rd July, 1832, aged 29 years. On 1st August, 1827, he married Sarah Tindall, of Scarboro’ (who died 31st December, 1864), and by her had four children, three sons and one daughter.

  1. EDMUND JANSON, born 26th July, 1828. Married Emily Elizabeth Hall, of Tottenham. Of whom presently.
  2. Frederick Janson, born 22nd July, 1831; died 26th March, 1841.
  3. Alfred James Janson, born 26th October, 1832; died 21st June, 1859, unmarried.
Daughter-
  1. Sarah Jane, born 27th March, 1830. Married Cornelius Hanbury, June 1850. See Chapter 20. NOTE:- A History of the Hanbury family is about to be published, to which refer.
EDMUND JANSON, of Speldhurst, Co. Kent (eldest son of Frederick Janson and sarah Tindall), was born 26th July, 1828. Maried, on 5th October, 1865, Emilly Elizabeth, daughter of William Hall, Esq., of Tottenham, by whom he had eight children, three sons and five daughters.

  1. EDMUND WILLIAM JANSON, of Eaton Mansions, Eaton Square, London, a partner in the firm of Percy Tarbutt & Co., Mining Engineers, of 18, St. Swithin’s Lane, E.C. Born 29th June, 1868. Married, 2nd August, 1899, Dorothy, daughter of Percy Tarbutt, Esq., by whom he has one child.
  2. Rex Tarbutt Janson, born 5th June, 1902.
  3. Hugonin de Haviland Janson, born 26th February, 1870; died 20th April, 1871.
  4. VINCENT TINDALL JANSON, born 31st August, 1877.

WILLIAM JANSON, Underwriter, of St. Leonards-on-Sea (sixth son of William Janson, of Lloyd’s, and Mary Hill), was born 6th June, 1805; died 1st January, 1868. He married Eliza Jane Dearman, 21st March, 1829, and had by her eleven children, four sons and seven daughters.

  2. Frederick William, born 26th May, 1842; died 15th October, 1863, s.p.
  3. DEARMAN, born 6th July, 1847. Of whom presently.

  5. Jane Eliza, born 288th may, 1839. Married, on 29th July, 1858, to Samuel Lloyd, of Wednesbury.

JOHN WILLIAM JANSON (eldest son of william Janson and Eliza Jane Dearman), born 13th December, 1831; died 3rd July, 1910. Married, 4th June, 1856, Louisa Burnand, of The Waldrons, Croydon, by whom five sons and seven daughters.

PERCY JANSON, Underwriter, of Newlands, Crockham Hill, Edenbridge (fifth son of John William Janson and Louisa Burnand),born 12th November, 1870. Married, on 17th October, 1900, at Kippington Church, Sevenoaks, to Kathleen Dixon, by whom he has two children.

Son-

Guy, born 8th October, 1903. Daughter- Pamela, born 4th June, 1909. DEARMAN JANSON (third son of William Janson and Eliza Jane Dearman), born 6th July, 1847; died 13th March, 1907. He married, on 29th September, 1874, Rachel Louisa, daughter of Sampson Samuel lloyd, by whom he had five children.

  2. Arthur Dearman, born 1st March, 1884.

JOHN I’ANSON, of Leyburn, and later of Finsbury Square, London (fifth son of Joshua I’Anson and Beatrice Hedley), was born 17th May, 1748; and died at Upminster 26th April, 1824. He changed the spelling of his name to Janson after going to London. He married twice, (1) Elizabeth, daughter of Henry Umfreville, of London, and (2) on 2nd February, 1816, Mary, daughter of Re. J. Clayton, of Hiighbury Place. He had two sons and one daughter.

  2. James, born 19th August, 1777.
Daughter- Elizabeth, died young. JAMES JANSON, of London (second and only surviving son of John I’Anson and Elizabeth Umfreville), born 19th August, 1777, died bef 1827. He married Margaret, daughter of Ralph Dunn, of Northumberland, by whom he had two children.

Son-

HENRY UMFREVILE, born 31st December, 1805. Of whom presently.

Daughter-

Elizabeth Umfreville, born 21st February, 1807. Married John Vleveland Green, of Highbury Park, on 5th April, 1827.
 
 

HENRY UMFREVILLE JANSON, of Pennsylvania Park, Exeter (only son of James Janson, of London, and Margaret Dunn), born 31st December, 1805; died 18th January, 1892. He married Charlotte Milligen Armstrong, daughter of Robert Armstrong, M.D., R.N., of Plymouth, by whom he had four children.

  2. EDWARD ARMSTRONG, bor 3rd October, 1865. Of whom presently.
Daughters-
  1. Emily Mary, born 1860. Married, in 1885, to John Haris, M.D., of Southernhay, Exeter, and had children.

EDWARD ARMSTRONG JANSON, of Lilydale, Australia (second son of Henry Umfreville Janson and Charlotte Milligen Armstrong), born 3rd October, 1865, married, 27th July, 1885, at Wapella, canada, Rosalind Quinella King, of Bulstrode, Co. Bucks, by whom he had two sons and one daughter.

  1. Edward Armstrong Janson, of Lilydale, Australia, born 1886.
  2. Stuart Henry Janson, born 21st May, 1889. Married Beatrice Blundell, in 1912, at Wapella, and has one daughter, Zelina Millicent, born in 1913.
Daughter- Zola, born 15th February, 1894. WILLIAM I’ANSON, Linen Manufacturer, of Darlington (third son of William I’Anson and Mary Kitching), born 7th April, 1784; died at Croft, 10th June 1821, and was buried at Darlington. He married, at Staindrop, on 27th April, 1808, Sarah, daughter of John Dixon, of Cockfield, who died 24th July, 1847. By her had two children.

Son-

CHARLES, born 16th January, 1809. Daughter- Rachel, born 1st December, 1811; died in 1879. CHARLES I’ANSON, of Darlington, Engineer and ironfounder (only son of James I’Anson and Sarah Dixon), born 16th January, 1809; died 3rd September, 1884. He was Justice of the Peace for the Borough of darlington, and Mayor of that town in 1871. He married, on 13th September, 1834, Gulielina, daughter of Joseph Coventry, of London, and by her had six children.

  1. James, born 3rd March, 1837; died 6th April, 1838.
  2. CHARLES, born 11th December, 1838. Of whom presently.
  3. JOSEPH COVENTRY, born 8th July, 1842. Of whom presently.
  4. James I’Anson, of Fairfield House, darlington, born 15th January, 1845; died at Gateshead, 30th March, 1898, unmarried. He was J.P. for the Borough of darlington, Governor of Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, Literate of the University of Durham, Director of Darlington Technical Cllege, and Partner in the firm of Charles I’Anson &Co., owners of the Whenoe Foundry.

  2. Ellen Mary, born 9th October, 1846; died 21st May, 1847.
CHARLES I’ANSON (second son of Charles I’Anson and Gulielina Coventry), born 11th December, 1838, married Hannah Oliver (she died 13th July, 1888). He died in Hong Kong in 1889. There were two daughters of the marriage.
  1. Kate Evelyn, born in 1863.
  2. Jessie Beatrice, born 22nd February, 1866, married 6th August, 1889, to Dr. Huntley, of Jarrow, and died 1st March, 1891, s.p.
JOSEPH COVENTRY I’ANSON (third son of Charles I’anson and Gulielina Coventry), born at darlington the 8th day od July 1842. In 1880 he was apprenticed to William Cudworth, M.I.C.E., Resident Engineer to the Stockton and Darlington Railway, and appointed Assistant Engineer on the North Eastarn Railway, Darlington Section, in 1863, having charge of the construction of the branch line from Bishop Auckland to St. Helens. Member of the firm of Robinson & I’Anson, Constructional Engineers to Victoria Bridge, Brisbane, Queensland. Engineer and General Manager to Fry, I’anson & Co., Rise carr Rolling Mills, Darlington, and afterwards partner in the firm with Sir Theodore Fry, Bart. In 1891 became General Manager of Robert Dorman & Co., , Ayton Rolling Mills, Middlesbro’. In 1892 undertook the survey of the Byers Green Branch of the North Eastern Railway. Reported in 1893 to the Colliery Guardian, Machinery Market, and Exporter, and Industries and Iron on the exhibits at the World’s fair, Chicargo. Traveled in the United States during 1893 and 1894. Partner in 1895-96 with Mr. James I’Anson, of darlington, as Consulting Engineers, &c. F.R.G.S. Member of the Iron and Steel Institute, Fellow of the Society of Arts, Member of the Cleveland Institute of Engineers, Member Institute Mechanical Enginners, Member of the North of England Board of Arbitration and Conciliation, &c., &c. Married Alice, daughter of Edward Ashby, Esq., of Staines, Middlesex, and has issue two sons and two daughters.

  2. ADELAIDE, born 6th June, 1872, married to Major R. E. Warden, R.A., of Croboro’, by whom two children.

JOSHUA I’ANSON, Farmer, Low Walworth (youngest son of William I’Anson and Mary Kitching), born 24th July, 1787; died 6th November, 1842. Married on 7th June, 1810, at Staindrop, Ann, daughter of John Dixon, of Cockfield, Coalowner. She died on 27th February, 1856, aged 69. By her he had six children.

  2. JAMES, born 23rd September, 1821. Of whom presently.
Daughters-
  1. Mary, born 26th April, 1811; died 1st January, 1825.

  3. Sarah, born 16th June 1814; married William Brewin, of Cirencester.
  4. Ann, born 1st February, 1818; died 17th March, 1904.
JOHN DIXON I’ANSON (elder son of Joshua I’Anson and Ann Dixon), born 21st June, 1816, married twice, (1) Ann Elliott, of Bishop Auckland, and (2) Jane Tace, daughter of George Dixon, of Newcastle. He had twelve children.

  2. Frederic John, born 27th August, 1858.
  3. Harry, born 15th August, 1862.

  6. Fanny, born 17th September, 1853, married on 20th March 1878, William Joseph Warner, of Hartlepool, and died 21st February, 1884.

JOHN GEORGE I’ANSON, of Tottenham, (eldest son of John Dixon I’Anson), born 18th February, 1846, married, 15th May, 1873, Ada Marion Tyler, of London, by whom he had six sons.

  1. George Dixon, born 8th September, 1874. Married 25th December, 1897, Mary Ann Clark.
  2. Harold, born 2nd July, 1876.
  3. Herbert, born 15th June, 1878.
  4. Frank, born 22nd May, 1880.

  6. John, born 21st June, 1885.
JAMES I’ANSON (younger son of Joshua I’Anson and Ann Dixon), born 23rd September, 1821, died 5th April, 1875. He married, on 18th September, 1851, Mary, daughter of Joseph Rutter, of Swansea, by whom he had seven children.

Sons-

  1. William, born 28th May, 1854; went to Toronto, Canada.
  2. James, born 1oth May, 1856; died 13th November, 1866, at Ackworth School.
  3. Edward Westoby, born 7th April, 1858.
  4. Farley, born 20th October, 1862; died 7th May, 1882, s.p.
Daughters-
  1. Annie Sabina, born 30th December, 1852; died 16th March, 1882.
  2. Gertrude Mary, born 17th November, 1860.
  3. Emily, born 29th August, 1864.
