James LEIGHTON 29 Sep 1791 at Saint
Martin In The Fields, Westminster. Married Sir James Leighton. She
was grandmother of Lord Leighton (formerly Sir Frederic Leighton, Bart.),
President of the Royal Academy.
"Sir James Leighton, was court physician to Czar Alexander I of
Russia; and Sir James' son, Frederic Sr., seemed destined to the same honor,
being fluent in Russian and passing his medical examination in St. Petersburg
with hIgh marks. Then something happened that caused Frederic Sr. to leave
Russia, soon after the asserted death of Alexander in 1825 and the accession
of Nicholas I, who was chronically suspIcious of all foreigers. The ill
health of Mrs. Leighton, which required a milder climate, was given as
the ostensible reason for the family's return to Emgland; they did not
choose to explain why they came back rich enough to live pretty much as
they pleased. Rumors had it that their money had come from either a bribe
or a reward, from one or the other Czar, or perhaps from the Grand Duke
Constantine who lost out in his attempt to gain the throne. "
